“When I meet you, in that moment, I’m no longer a part of your future. I start quickly becoming part of your past. But in that instant, I get to share your present. And you, you get to share mine. And that is the greatest present of all.”—Sarah Kay, Hiroshima (via noregisjustkelly)
I love that feeling you get when you don’t remember that you’re reading. When you’re so captured by a book that you forget you’re reading the words. All you see is the descriptions and conversations that being to play out like a movie in your head. You don’t even think about it. Then before you know it, you’ve read 100 pages without realizing it. That’s probably the best feeling in the world.
“I am dirt.
I come from it, I walk on it, I feel like it.
I fall down on the dirt.
I pray for the dirt to take me back,
Back to where it’s peaceful, it’s cool,
And I can sleep and spill out all that I am;
Please let the dirt take me back.”—
John Morello (From his one-man show “Dirt”); performed at my school Monday October 17th.
“This is going to be a long post - I don’t really know where to start. I am trying to sift through hundreds of emails and messages about what happened at Perry Hall High School today. I am speechless and pretty much moved to tears. How is it that there is such a lack of SIMPLE HUMAN DECENCY AND KINDNESS toward one another? How does bullying reach THIS level?? Some people might think that bullying is only between two people and bystanders are not affected. Well that is crap! EVERYONE is affected. I am affected, YOU are affected. TWO lives have been hurt now…the shooter and the victim. RIDICULOUS! I can’t possibly yell it loud enough or say it often enough - BE KIND TO EACH OTHER! It’s EASY, it takes LESS ENERGY than being mean, it’s FREE, and it’s even a way to make YOURSELF feel better. BE KIND, BE KIND, BE KIND!!!! My saying is: YOU CAN BE A HERO TO SOMEONE WHO IS BEING BULLIED JUST BY BEING THEIR FRIEND!!! What if this kid had a friend to talk to??? The outcome may have been SO different. God Bless EVERYONE involved in this. While my foundation team prepares for another Pro Kindness Rally this fall, all I can do in the meantime is pray for everyone to stay safe, and BE KIND. BE the difference for someone!!!!”—
Ray Rice, running back on the Baltimore Ravens, speaking on Facebook about today’s shooting.
I am so proud to have been a part of this program that has changed so many lives. Every year around this time, I feel homesick for it. I want to help my students learn what I learned at camp. I can’t express how grateful I am to have LMTI.
showtune of the week elegies - “goodbye/boom boom” (2003 OCR)
there aren’t many works of musical theater that directly address the events we commemorate today. actually, the only one that comes to mind is william finn’s song cycle elegies. the show is a nonlinear, unconnected series of, yep, elegies, each honoring deceased figures from finn’s life. its final two songs are devoted to remembering the september 11th attacks and their aftermath.
in this song, a man trapped in one of the burning towers on that fateful morning calls his wife to say goodbye. she hears the phone ring as news of the attacks comes on the television, but she can’t seem to move to answer the call. she hears his voice on the answering machine:
tell our perfect child i wasn’t perfect except in loving him i would expect i’m correct when i say he’s the salt of the earth remember, my love, the day of his birth when i sang goofy songs and wept? i thought that we had it all except now i’m saying my goodbyes the living was the prize the ending’s not the story just saying my goodbyes goodbye
